Last week we went to tour the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It was free for California residents in January. So I asked what was the most interesting thing that we saw to Joel and Adelle.
Joel: the engine room (amazing to think that people knew how all of the things in that room worked, the communications room (you could call anywhere in the civilized world from the Queen Mary), and the little windshield wipers called spinners on the bridge.
Adelle: the beds hanging from chains that the soldiers slept on, and that now there are restaurants and stores on the boat.
I liked the photo of the Queen Mary with 16,000 troops on deck in 1943 when it only had life boats for 8000. But after all, "this is war!" And it was interesting to visit the isolation ward. If you weren't sick before you went there you would be afterwards. It was stifling.
